This project was my idea & it is very rewarding to see it setup on campus.
This is awesome. UMBC needs to get one.
You occasionally hear about cyclists being jerks in the United States, from shouting abuse at motorists, selectively disregarding traffic laws, acting holier-than-thou about their daily commute, and the list goes on.
But if you look at a country like Denmark, all their cyclists seem so chill, biking together on their comfortable bikes, maintaining order (as shown in this amazing video from the netherlands), and being happy and civilized. Why should it be different there?
I think the roads in most US cities are so toxic to bikers, that you almost have to have an independent stubborn streak to attempt it. Who else would be proud to say they bike by themselves 10 miles on busy streets in all weather, when everyone else has a comfortable (although perhaps tedious) drive.
The result is the elite warriors who don specialized clothing, grit their teeth, and then hold their own amongst streams of traffic who don’t want them there. No wonder they get a little defensive when almost run off the road.
We need to be more chill, like in Europe, but I think the first thing that needs to change is our urban environments. That does seem to be happening though. Hopefully soon, walking and biking will be much happier activities on the city streets, and people will save their cars for adventures, not day-to-day traffic.

These are still very important questions. It’s getting about time for me to oil the chain on mine.

Bicycles balance by themselves when going fast, but new research suggests that common explanations miss the main cause.
It’s over, it’s done, I can’t change my mind now: today I went to Superb Bicycle in Boston and picked up a sweet little Linus Dutchi one-speed. I’d tested the 3-speed at BicycleSPACE, but there weren’t any in stock at Superb so I tried this one out and fell in love. It glides up hills (and is fast fast fast on flat pavement), and I love having a coaster brake instead of hand brakes. I’m not 100% sure about the color, but I think it’ll grow on me. Riding around Boston today was a breeze—the bigger hills in Andover will be tougher, but I’m up to the challenge.
New bike day = best day. I’m soooo glad to be done.
That’s great!!! Singlespeeds are the best. They’re a lot faster, simpler, and easier to maintain. There’s nothing there but pure awesome. Keep your blog posted with your impressions, I’ve heard good things about Linus bikes :)
Oh Copenhagen, you so awesome.
